He's now going to attend a meeting with Sofía Martinez, his HR manager.

English for Business Chapter 13 Lesson 3 Time off work

Watch the video!

Sofia: Our time off policies are listed in the work handbook, but I wanted to go through them to give you the chance to ask any questions you may have.

Jeremy: Sounds great.

Sofia: So, if you need to take sick leave, you will receive full pay for the first 10 days. Thereafter, you'll move to statutory sick pay, which is £99.35 per week. This will be paid by us for up to 28 weeks.

Jeremy: Okay.

Sofia: The next point is furlough. This is unlikely to happen since the pandemic is already behind us, but should (если) we have to close down for an extended period of time and you can't continue working, we would pay 75% of your current salary.

Jeremy: I really hope it's not going to happen again.

Sofia: Me too. Another thing that doesn't happen very often but is perhaps more likely is snow days. In case of heavy snow, you can work from home without any problem.

Jeremy: Okay, that's good to know.

Sofia: Now, something that's more common is time off in lieu /luː/ (взамен). It might happen that you have to work overtime sometimes, but you can take that time off on another day. (in lieu of - взамен)

Jeremy: So if I worked three hours extra on a Wednesday, could I take a Thursday morning off?

Sofia: Exactly.

Jeremy: Sounds good to me.

Sofia: The last thing I want to cover is our sabbatical policy. After five years with the company, you are entitled (имеете право, назначается) to a year off. (sabbatical — /səˈbætɪkl/)

Jeremy: Would I get paid during that time off?

Sofia: Unfortunately not. However, you would be entitled to come back to work to your exact same position and salary.

Jeremy: Great.

Sofia: Okay, I think that's everything. Do you have any questions?

Jeremy: No, thanks so much, Sofia.

X: "After five years with the company, employees are entitled to take a one-year sabbatical leave. Although this leave is unpaid, employees are guaranteed to return to their same position and salary upon completion of the leave.
