Real conditionals
We talk about some conditions which are real (describing truth, routine and things that are likely to happen), and other conditions that are unreal (they are imaginary or unlikely to happen in the future).
In this lesson, we'll review the two types of conditional used to describe situations that are either real or very likely to happen.
Let's start with conditions that describe truth and things that happen regularly, which we also call zero conditionals.
If you live in San Francisco, you always have the threat of a major earthquake looming over your head. Elvin is pointing out a general truth. True -Elvin is pointing out the general truth that earthquakes are common in San Francisco.
"Whenever I'm craving food from back home, I head to Japantown to buy groceries."Honoka is describing something she always does when she wants Japanese food. True.-Honoka always goes to Japantown when a condition
("whenever I'm craving food from back home") is met. We use zero conditionals to describe general truths, but also to talk about habits and routines.
We use a present simple or continuous verb in the condition clause (If...) and a present simple in the result clause (what happens if the condition is met).
Remember that not all condition clauses start with "If". We can use "when", "whenever" or "unless".-когда", "когда угодно" или "если".
- Next up, we'll see another type of real conditional. How is the meaning different from the zero conditional (which describes truth and habits)"If my company allows me to work remotely, I'll probably move to Texas.""If my company allows me to work remotely, I'll probably move to Texas." Elvin thinks moving to Texas is a real possibility. TRUE - Elvin thinks there's a chance he'll be able to work remotely, and will move to Texas if he is allowed.
First conditional review
We use first conditionals to describe situations which are very likely to happen in the future.
We use a present simple verb in the condition clause (If...) and the modal verb e.g. "will" in the result clause.
We can also use the modals "might", "may" and "could" in the result clause to indicate something is slightly less likely to happen than when we use "will".
Providing I've got enough money left at the end of the month, I'll take a trip to see some friends in Los Angeles. -Honoka is referring to something she's likely to do in the future.- True-She will likely go to Los Angeles, but only on the condition that she has enough money and can afford to (позволить). If I'm in the mood, I might explore(исследовать) the street art or go shopping.
Which conditional sentence refers to a possible future situation?-If it rains, I'll catch a tram instead of cycling.
Personally, if I'm feeling lazy on weekends, I often just catch a tram downtown..."-Honoka is referring to something she's likely to do in the future.False - She is using zero conditional here to refer to a present routine and not the first conditional to refer to the future. · When you move to San Francisco, you'll understand how it got the nickname "The City of Fog".When you go to Alcatraz, you'll see the prison cells where famous gangsters were locked up.
Avoid this mistake! With first conditional structures, we don't use "will" in the condition clause, only in the result clause!
If the sky is clear, it'll be worth hiking up to see the sunset over the bay.
