In this lesson we'll read a page from Aisha's personal diary describing a recent trip to Brighton with her workmates and learn how to recognise two features of writing - ellipsis (leaving out words we'd normally expect to be there) and parallel structures (repeating the same grammatical forms within a sentence).

Expected it to be a sleepy seaside town, but Andrew told me its nickname(кличка) is "London by Sea", and now I totally get why!

There's so much to do and no way we could squeeze everything in (втиснуть), so we decided that sticking  (придерживаться) to outdoor activities rather than visiting museums was a better option.

Grabbed(схватили) a quick coffee when we arrived, and figured out (выяснили) what to do first. Started with a long stroll (прогуляться) along Brighton Palace Pier(пирс) and a wander (бродить) through The Lanes.

I was impressed by the spectacular architecture there too - we didn't get round to seeing the Royal Pavilion from the inside, we only saw it from the gardens so I'm putting that at the top of my list next time, I've heard it has amazing regency-style /ˈriː.dʒən.si/. interiors.

A closer look at vocabulary 

Before we get into (попасть) ellipsis and parallel structures, let's make sure we understand the meaning of some of the vocabulary in the text. When meeting unfamiliar words in a text, it's always a good idea to work things out from context first...

9. Introducing ellipsis 

   The style of a diary entry is very informal – we're usually the only reader of what we write, so we sometimes leave words out at the beginning of a sentence or clause because it's obvious what's being referred to. This is called "ellipsis". Let's see an example of this...Стиль записи в дневнике очень неформальный - мы, как правило, единственные читатели того, что мы пишем, поэтому мы иногда оставляем слова в начале предложения или пункта, потому что очевидно, на что ссылаются.     We know Aisha is the subject of the sentence as this is her diary and she writes from her perspective.

        A "parallel structure" is one where a specific grammatical form or pattern is repeated within a sentence.
        
        Using parallel structures helps to increase the readability(читаемость) of your writing and patterns (модели) helps a reader to follow more easily.(проще) 

        So, we took a train to Brighton, got out of the city for a day, had some fun and got to know each other a little better. (past simple verbs which take a direct object.)

        "...we decided that sticking to outdoor activities rather than visiting museums was a better option."  (noun phrase with a gerund (-ing verb) that takes a direct object.)
