Looking good and feeling good. 

There are many ways that we can express our individuAlity(личность), but one of the easiest ways is through our appearance and personal image.

In this lesson we're going to meet WEnzile ThwAa, a beauty enthusiast from JoHAnnesburg [dʒəʊˈhænɪsbɜːrɡ]., South Africa 🇿🇦(Йоханнесбург) , and learn how beauty products helped her to become more confident in herself(уверенная в себе) and express her individuality. 

Before we watch Wenzile's vlog, let's start look at some vocabulary that we can use to discuss this topic. Get ready for a colourful lesson!

What's the difference between "makeup" and "cosmetics"?Often people use "makeup" and "cosmetics" to refer to(обозначить) the same thing, but there is a subtle difference.

cosmetics = a range(ряд, спектор) of products which we can use on our body or face to cleanse, protect or alter(изменить) its appearance. This can include makeup, but also refers to creams, oils, cleansers and moisturisers.

makeup = more colourful products which tend to alter the appearance of the face. Makeup is a type of cosmetic e.g. "lipstick", "eyeshadow", "mascara"(тушь для ресниц), etc.(Также это средство имеет и другое название - «mascara», так принято называть данную косметику в англоговорящих странах, этот термин переводится как защитная маска.)

"contouring": [ˈkɒn.tʊr.ɪŋ].-(контуринг).контурный макияж Contouring is a technique where you use makeup which is lighter or darker than your skin to define your facial features.(чтобы определить ваши черты лица)

a new look - новый взгляд, новый образ Have you seen Aida's new look? I did a double take because I didn't   ecognise her at first!   I did a double take-я была в шоке          Pawel is requesting(требует) his usual haircut.=false=Pawel would like to experiment with "a new look", so he wants a different haircut to the one he normally has.                            Вставить текст 2 Maria has a new look and when I asked her how she did it, she told me she had contoured her face.

"a look" vs "looks"

We can use the term "a look" to talk about the specific style, outfit(наряд) or makeup that someone is wearing in a particular moment.

We can use the plural form "looks" to talk about someone's appearance more generally in a way that refers more to their attractiveness.

I love her look! = I love what she is wearing and how she appears today!

Looks (внешность)aren't as important as personality(Внешность не так важна как личность) = Someone's appearance is less important than their character.

Определение говорит о том, что во многих случаях форма во множественном числе "looks" используется для обсуждения внешности человека более общим образом, обращая внимание на их привлекательность. Это относится к тому, как в разговорах о внешности акцентируется восприятие привлекательности в целом.

Pete is less attractive now than he was at college.=true=She says he has "lost his looks" which implies he no longer appears as attractive as he did before.

to sneak-sneaked (или snuck)-sneaked (или snuck)- пробираться, проникать  "sneak": [sniːk]"красться" или "подкрадываться" When I was a teen, my best friend lived next door. I would sometimes sneak out of the house when my parents had gone to bed to go see her. They never realised!  Do you think we can sneak into the building without anyone seeing us? 

I snuck a cookie in my mouth while nobody was looking.Я засунул печенье себе в рот, пока никто не видел (Да, "sneak" может быть переведено двумя словами, и перевод зависит от контекста: Красться: Например, "He likes to sneak around at night" (Ему нравится красться ночью).Тайно проникать: Например, "I snuck a cookie in my mouth while nobody was looking" (Я тайно положил печенье в рот, когда никто не смотрел).

Complete the sentence with the past tense of "sneak". -          I snuck a cookie in my mouth while nobody was looking.

Should I say "sneaked" or "snuck" in the past tense?       It's actually common for you to hear both of these past forms.   The original past form of "sneak"(пробираться, красться) was "sneaked" and it was treated(рассматривался) like a regular verb. However, during the 20th century the irregular form "snuck" appeared and it became a lot more widely used than "sneaked". It's a lot more likely you'll hear "snuck" than "sneaked", but in other English-speaking countries you may hear both versions of the past tense. Technically both options are valid(действующее), but we'd advise using "snuck" as it's far more(гораздо) frequently used.

I went to a friend's birthday party last night, but I wasn't really in the mood for it. There were lots of people there, I didn't think I'd be missed, so I snuck out after an hour. Вчера я была на дне рождения друга, но я не была в настроении. Guys: male, female or both?(Парни: мужчина, женщина или и то, и другое?) In the singular form, the word "guy" always refers to a male, but it's incredibly(очень,чрезвычайно) common in informal situations for English speakers to use the plural form "guys" to refer to a group of people in general.

My friend's been seeing (встречается) a guy from work.	My friend has been dating(встречается) a man from work.
Hey, how are you guys?	Hey, how is everyone? (to a group of both men and women)

Listening for the gist -Выслушивание сути gist - Слово "gist" в основном означает основную суть или основной смысл чего-то. Это термин используется, чтобы выделить ключевые моменты или основные идеи, не углубляясь в детали. Например, если кто-то рассказывает вам длинный рассказ, и вы спрашиваете, "What's the gist of it?" (В чём суть?), то вы просите краткое изложение основной идеи или смысла рассказа. Переводится как "суть", "основное", "краткое изложение".

The first time you watch the video, it's important to focus on the main ideas or the "gist" of what Wenzile is saying and why her message is important. This means not focusing too much on smaller details such as individual words and sounds. Sometimes you need to watch until the very(в самом) end of the video to grasp (understand) the main point of a video. В первый раз, когда вы смотрите видео, важно сосредоточиться на основных идеях или "сути" того, что говорит Wenzile и почему ее сообщение важно. The next set of questions will help us listen out for some specific information in Wenzile's video. When we listen for specific information we don't need to understand everything – only the parts that are relevant to(имеют отношение к) answer specific questions.

💡 A good strategy is to identify key words in the questions and listen out for words or phrases which mean the same thing in the video.

Let's practise this...

Wenzile did experiment with her sister's makeup, but her sister didn't know about it because she had "left for school". Select the verb which indicates that Wenzile was trying to be secretive.(скрытной)-sneak

She asks, "What if my parents or classmates found out?" (a hypothetical situation). I would wear my black eyeliner, pink lipstick and clumpy(массивная тушь) mascara. It wasn’t the best makeup look but I felt beautiful and confident. And that’s all that mattered.  Makeup and contouring made Wenzile feel and look more like a woman while she was doing her degree.--- She says she used makeup "to feel feminine" and that contouring changed her face shape from "masculine to feminine".      Wenzile says that applying fake eyelashes is hard because the size isn't right for her eyes and they don't stay on her eyelids.                      And for the longest time, makeup allowed me to pass to a degree. If you feel like a girl inside, passing means you also look like a girl to other people. And to this day, I still wear makeup. I love makeup, but I don’t use makeup anymore to hide parts of my face.

Natural spoken English     In the last two exercises we saw Wenzile using some natural expressions that are commonly used in spoken English.
