Looking good and feeling good. 

There are many ways that we can express our individuAlity(личность), but one of the easiest ways is through our appearance and personal image.

In this lesson we're going to meet WEnzile ThwAa, a beauty enthusiast from JoHAnnesburg [dʒəʊˈhænɪsbɜːrɡ]., South Africa 🇿🇦(Йоханнесбург) , and learn how beauty products helped her to become more confident in herself(уверенная в себе) and express her individuality. 

Before we watch Wenzile's vlog, let's start look at some vocabulary that we can use to discuss this topic. Get ready for a colourful lesson!

What's the difference between "makeup" and "cosmetics"?Often people use "makeup" and "cosmetics" to refer to(обозначить) the same thing, but there is a subtle difference.

cosmetics = a range(ряд, спектор) of products which we can use on our body or face to cleanse, protect or alter(изменить) its appearance. This can include makeup, but also refers to creams, oils, cleansers and moisturisers.

makeup = more colourful products which tend to alter the appearance of the face. Makeup is a type of cosmetic e.g. "lipstick", "eyeshadow", "mascara"(тушь для ресниц), etc.(Также это средство имеет и другое название - «mascara», так принято называть данную косметику в англоговорящих странах, этот термин переводится как защитная маска.)

"a look" vs "looks"

We can use the term "a look" to talk about the specific style, outfit(наряд) or makeup that someone is wearing in a particular moment.

We can use the plural form "looks" to talk about someone's appearance more generally in a way that refers more to their attractiveness.

I love her look! = I love what she is wearing and how she appears today!

Looks (внешность)aren't as important as personality(Внешность не так важна как личность) = Someone's appearance is less important than their character.

Pete is less attractive now than he was at college.=true=She says he has "lost his looks" which implies he no longer appears as attractive as he did before.

I would sometimes sneak out of the house when my parents had gone to bed to go see her. They never realised!  Do you think we can sneak into the building without anyone seeing us?
