Have you ever considered(рассматривали) getting cosmetic surgery?
Вы никогда не думали о косметической операции?
Social media and reality TV shows have popularised cosmetic procedures, but do people know enough about the risks before getting them done? Социальные сети и реалити-шоу популяризировали косметические процедуры, но знают ли люди достаточно о рисках, прежде чем их выполнить?
Today, we'll read a blog post written by a woman who changed her mind about cosmetic surgery, and we'll focus on some reporting verb patterns used in the text. Сегодня мы прочитаем пост в блоге, написанный женщиной, которая изменила свое мнение о косметической хирургии, и мы сосредоточимся на некоторых сообщениях о шаблонах глаголов, используемых в тексте.
Why do so many people feel unhappy with their appearance?
There's so much pressure on people to look perfect these days.
Why is that exactly?
Honestly, I blame social media for making us feel insecure about our appearance. Scrolling through images and videos of models who look impossibly perfect can have an incredibly damaging effect on your self-esteem.
The problem is, the creators of these images have usually undergone some kind of cosmetic procedure or applied some kind of filter to achieve that sought-after "perfect look".
I wouldn't mind if they were being honest about it, but the fact is that many content creators post these unrealistic images and let people believe they're natural, when they aren't.
I just wish they'd have more integrity, but they rarely admit to having had work done on their faces and seen plenty of them deny getting cosmetic surgery, when it's so obvious that they're lying about it!
Why do so many people feel unhappy with their appearance?
Почему так много людей чувствуют неудовлетворенность своим внешним видом?
There's so much pressure on people to look perfect these days. Существует огромное давление на людей выглядеть идеально в наши дни.
Why is that exactly? (Почему именно это происходит?
Honestly, I blame (винить) social media for making us feel insecure(опасность, неуверенность) about our appearance. Честно говоря, я виню социальные сети за то, что они заставляют нас чувствовать себя неуверенно в своем внешнем виде.
Scrolling through images and videos of models who look impossibly perfect can have an incredibly (невероятно) damaging(разрушительный) effect on your self-esteem (самооценку). . Листая изображения и видео моделей, которые выглядят невероятно идеально, может оказать невероятно разрушительное воздействие на вашу самооценк.)
The problem is, the creators of these images have usually undergone (прошли) some kind of cosmetic procedure or applied (применили) some kind of filter to achieve that sought-after "perfect look". Проблема в том, что создатели этих изображений обычно прошли какую-то косметическую процедуру или применили какой-то фильтр, чтобы достичь этого желанного "идеального вида" I wouldn't mind (я бы не возражал) if they were being honest about it, but the fact is that many content(содержательные) creators post these unrealistic images and let people believe they're natural, when they aren't. Меня бы это не расстраивало, если бы они были честными по этому поводу, но факт в том, что многие создатели контента размещают эти нереалистичные изображения и позволяют людям верить, что они естественны, когда это не так. I just wish they'd have more integrity (честность, добросовестность) but they rarely admit(признают) to having had work done on their faces and seen plenty of them deny getting cosmetic surgery, when it's so obvious(очевидно) that they're lying about it! Мне просто хотелось бы, чтобы у них было больше честности, но они редко признают, что провели работу над своим лицом, и видел много случаев, когда они отрицают пластическую хирургию, когда очевидно, что они лгут об этом!

How does Marina feel about content(информационных) creators on social media?
She criticises them for promoting unrealistic beauty standards.
Reporting verb patterns
The reporting verbs we saw in the previous lesson (e.g. "explained", "claimed" ) could all be followed by "that", but not all reporting verbs behave this way, and some are followed by other verb patterns.
Marina uses the verbs "blame(винить)", "admit (признать)" and "deny (отрицать)". Let's see what pattern comes after each one in some reported statements...
What does Marina think is responsible (ответственны) for our insecurities (неуверенность)around how we look? Что, по мнению Марины, является причиной нашей неуверенности (неуверенности) в том, как мы выглядим?
They rarely admit(признают) to having had work done on their faces and seen plenty of them deny getting cosmetic surgery,
Take a closer look 🔍
The verbs "blame", "admit" and "deny" are all followed by a verb in the gerund (–ing) form.
Notice that when we use "blame (винить)" we need to state who or what is responsible for something, followed by "for". You don't always have to have a preposition after "admit (признать)", e.g. "He admitted getting surgery".
Did Marina get her lips done?
Marina admits to feeling a little down about her appearance in a blog post she writes. She writes about feeling tempted (искушение) to get lip fillers (наполнители) (injections which add volume to your lips), but did she actually go through with it in the end? Let's find out...
Why I changed my mind about getting lip fillers
After constant exposure to filtered images, I reached a point where I felt unhappy with my appearance and considered getting lip fillers.
It was only supposed to be a couple of small injections, what harm could it do?
Before I went ahead with it, I discussed my plans with a friend and she persuaded me to do some research first, so that I knew the risks.
Don't get me wrong, she encouraged me to do whatever made me feel happy, but she was definitely concerned that something might go wrong.
She warned me not to choose a salon before reading reviews about them first, because she'd heard that some of them weren't very reputable.
There are lots of places out there where they don't take hygiene seriously and some treatment providers aren't suitably qualified.
There were lots of reviews online from people claiming that they'd been tricked by one salon that had used cheap, poor quality fillers and charged high prices.
Ultimately, what really changed my mind was a video I saw on Youtube by a guy who had a lip filler treatment that resulted in a nasty infection.
The person who administered the treatment clearly hadn't sterilised the syringe properly, and when he went back to them to ask for insurance details, it turned out they didn't have any.
He shared photos of what happened to his face and it was awful – it really convinced me to change my mind. I decided it really wasn't worth the risk.

Why I changed my mind about getting lip fillers Почему я передумал делать увеличение губ
After constant exposure (воздействия) to filtered (фильтрованных) images, I reached a point where I felt unhappy with my appearance and considered getting lip fillers(наполнители). После постоянного воздействия отфильтрованных изображений я добрался до момента, когда чувствовал неудовлетворенность своим внешним видом и задумывался об увеличении губ.
It was only supposed (предполагалось) to be a couple of small injections, what harm could it do? Это должны были быть всего лишь пара маленьких инъекций, чем это могло быть вредным?
Before I went ahead with it, I discussed my plans with a friend and she persuaded(убедила) me to do some research first, so that I knew the risks. Прежде чем я приступил к этому, я обсудил свои планы с подругой, и она уговорила меня сначала провести исследование, чтобы я знал риски.
Don't get me wrong, she encouraged me to do whatever made me feel happy, but she was definitely concerned (обеспокоена) that something might go wrong. Не поймите меня неправильно, она поддерживала меня в том, чтобы делать то, что делает меня счастливым, но ей определенно было беспокойно, что что-то может пойти не так.
She warned me not to choose a salon before reading reviews about them first, because she'd heard that some of them weren't very reputable (уважаемые). Она предупредила меня не выбирать салон, пока не прочитает обзоры о них, потому что она слышала, что некоторые из них не очень репутабельны.
There are lots of places out there where they don't take hygiene (гигиена) seriously and some treatment providers aren't suitably qualified. Есть много мест, где не серьезно относятся к гигиене, и некоторые поставщики услуг не имеют соответствующей квалификации.
There were lots of reviews online from people claiming that they'd been tricked (обмануты) by one salon that had used cheap, poor quality fillers and charged (обвиняли) high prices. Было много отзывов онлайн от людей, утверждающих, что их обманули одним салоном, который использовал дешевые, низкокачественные наполнители и взимал высокие цены. Ultimately, what really changed my mind was a video I saw on Youtube by a guy who had a lip filler treatment(процедуру) that resulted in a nasty infection. В конечном итоге то, что действительно изменило мое мнение, было видео, которое я увидел на YouTube парнем, который сделал увеличение губ, что привело к отвратительной инфекции.
The person who administered (осуществлялась) the treatment clearly (явно) hadn't sterilised the syringe (шприц) properly, and when he went back to them to ask for insurance details, it turned out (оказалось)they didn't have any. Тот, кто проводил процедуру, явно не дезинфицировал шприц правильно, и когда он вернулся к ним, чтобы попросить данные по страховке, оказалось, что у них их не было.
He shared photos of what happened to his face and it was awful – it really convinced me to change my mind. I decided it really wasn't worth the risk. Он поделился фотографиями того, что произошло с его лицом, и это было ужасно – это действительно убедило меня изменить свое мнение. Я решил, что это действительно не стоит риска.
Why did Marina decide not to get lip fillers? She was put off ( отпугнуло, перенесла) by a video about someone else's bad experience with fillers. Ее отпугнуло видео о плохом опыте кого-то другого с наполнителями.
"She warned me not to choose a salon before reading reviews about it first". The verb "warned" is followed by a verb in the gerund (–ing) form. FALSE
When used in a reported statement, "warn" is followed by an infinitive (e.g. "to read")
Reporting verbs followed by an infinitive🕵️
Marina's blog post contained some reporting verbs which are followed by an object + infinitive structure in a reported statement.
Here are some examples...
Match the sentence halves.
She blamed social media...for fuelling the demand for lip fillers.Она обвинила соцсети...в том, что они увеличили спрос на наполнители губ.
Influencers don't always admit...to having had cosmetic procedures openly.Инфлюенсеры не всегда признают...что у них были косметические процедуры открыто.
Marina's friend warned her not...to go through with the injections.Друг Марины предупредил ее не делать инъекции...
What does Marina think is responsible for our insecurities around how we look?
"She told us we shouldn't rush into getting cosmetic treatments done." = She warned us not to rush into getting cosmetic procedures done.
Excellent job! 😊 ⭐
Now you should feel more confident with the different verb patterns that we use with some of the most common reporting verbs.
In our next lesson, we'll see some of these verbs again and watch a video about what it's like to work in a hospital.
See you again soon!
