Learn language to talk about differing opinions

Giving opinions on hot topics 

As an advanced English speaker, you need to be able to express your opinions on spicy(острый) (controversial) social issues.

This lesson will explore some hotly debated issues in medicine and healthcare and we'll learn some phrases for describing opinions.

Let's begin!

to take a stance(позиция) on something - занимать позицию по какому-то вопросу

I'd have to do more research on gene [dʒiːn] (ген) editing technologies before taking a firm stance on their use. Мне нужно больше исследовать технологии редактирования генов, прежде чем занять твердую позицию по их использованию.

"I've been reading a book on assisted dying, and I was really surprised at the stance (на позицию) the author takes, but her arguments are compelling." "Я читаю книгу о помощи в умирании, и я действительно удивлен позицией, которую занимает автор, но её аргументы убедительны."

He expected the author to have a different opinion on this issue. Он ожидал, что у автора будет иное мнение по этому вопросу.

The "stance" refers to the author's opinion and the speaker being "surprised" suggests he expected it to be different.Термин "позиция" относится к мнению автора, и тот факт, что оратор "удивлен" предполагает, что оно должно быть иным.

to give your two cents - "вставить свои пять копеек" или "высказать свое мнение"(идиома)

If you want my two cents, social media companies need to crack down(сломать, пресечь) on vaccine misinformation. Если хочешь мое мнение, компании социальных сетей должны бороться с дезинформацией о вакцинах.

"Here's my two cents. Reality TV shows about cosmetics surgery only seem to encourage people to have it done." The speaker is relaying(передает) a fact. FALSE The speaker wants to "gives their two cents", i.e. to give her opinion.

To see eye to eye (idiom)

If you "don't see eye to eye" with someone, it means you disagree with them.

While you may sometimes hear this expression used in an affirmative sentence, it's far more likely you'll hear it used with a negative form and meaning.Хотя вы можете иногда слышать это выражение, используемое в утвердительном предложении, гораздо более вероятно, что вы услышите, что оно используется с отрицательной формой и значением.

We really don't see eye to eye. (We disagree with each other.)

My mother and I have never seen eye to eye on that. (We've never agreed with each other.)

The speakers are on the same page."FALSE  If you're "not on the same page", it means you disagree with someone over something.

   "We gave our two cents, we're on the same page, but we don't see eye to eye." - "Мы высказали свои мысли, мы находимся на одной волне, но у нас разные точки зрения."

Ira and Rachel are having a heated discussion about their baby son, Zach. They just don't see eye to eye (не согласны) on one important aspect of parenting (воспитания). What could it be?

Before we find out, let's see some phrases we'll hear them use...

Ira and Rachel don't see eye to eye about whether or not they should...get their son vaccinated.

Rachel has changed her stance on vaccinating Zach since the last time they discussed the matter.

Ira thinks Rachel is completely wrong about vaccine chemicals. FALCE He admits she is right "up to a point". Vaccines do contain chemicals, but he doesn't think they can cause harm.

To counter Rachel's argument that vaccines "aren't natural because they contain chemicals", Ira points out that...

Our tone can convey a lot of extra meaning in a discussion. Did you notice any changes in Ira and Rachel's tone as they were talking?

   "I take lightly" переводится как "я отношусь легко" или "я не воспринимаю всерьез".- Rachel's tone is defensive.

Okay, I'm sorry, I just wasn't expecting you to change your mind on this. (Хорошо, прости, я просто не ожидала, что ты передумаешь на этот счет.) I thought we'd already agreed to get him vaccinated. (Я думала, мы уже договорились сделать ему прививку.) -

He seems surprised and a little confused.

Uh oh...what happens next?! 

It looks like Ira and Rachel still aren't on the same page about whether to get Zach's shots done or not... How are they going to resolve this disagreement? Is Ira going to win this battle, or is Rachel going to get her own way? One of them is going to need to take a different stance... занимать другую позицию по какому-то вопросу
