Victor Merzhanov was once called by a Swedish critic "a descendant of that line of great Russian-born pianists that began with Ziloty and Rachmaninov". Merzhanov graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire with distinction and his name was inscribed in its marble wall along with those of Scryabin and Rachmaninov. During his career he gave more tran 1500 recitals and concerts recitals with such conductors as Zanderling, Kondrashin, Gauk, Rozhdestvensky, Temirkanov, Svetlanov and many others. Merzhanov teaches at Moscow Conservatory since 1947.

...In 1975, my neighbour in Aylmer, Quebec told me that he had attended a recital by Rachmaninoff in Toronto in 1916. He said the audience demanded Rachmaninoff play the Prelude in C sharp minor, but R told them he did not regard it as one of his important works and proceeded to stare them down until they quietened and he could play a sonata. I was 19 when my neighbour told me this; it was amazing to me that he had seen a great composer and musician from such a different period of music to my own (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc).
