LESSON 3 CHAPTER 10
Making a motivational speech
In this lesson we'll review some of the public speaking techniques from previous lessons and you'll have a chance to prepare your own short speech for the Busuu Community about a topic you feel passionate about. Can you remember the techniques we learned from Barack Obama in the two previous lessons?
The more gestures you make in a speech, the better! Just wave your arms around as much as possible! This is good advice about using gestures in public speaking.=False=Using too many gestures can be distracting(отвлекающее), so just use them to emphasise the most important parts of your speech.
In order to appear(показаться) friendly and trustworthy(надежным) to the audience, hands can be positioned in an open position in front of your body.1Для того, чтобы показаться дружелюбным и надежным для аудитории, руки могут быть размещены в открытой позиции перед вашим телом.Listen to Rebekah's speech about a change she made in her life. What do you think the main objective of her speech is?The best thing I ever did
Smartphones are a powerful tool, but one day I realised that mine was starting to ruin my life.
When I got my very first smartphone, I felt like I'd just been given superpowers! I could find the answer to any question at the touch of a button... But very soon my superhero powers wore(износился) off because social media came along and turned me into a zombie. And let’s face it, I’m not the only one. Perhaps you will recognise yourself somewhere in my story…
I was connected 24/7 to social media apps, and every time someone “liked” or commented on my posts I got a little adrenaline rush(прилив адреналина). I was addicted(зависима). One day I overslept and was late for work. I noticed my phone was still in my hand when I woke up. Immediately, I understood what the problem was.
So how did I take control of the situation?
I switched off social media apps completely, switched up my routines by starting some new hobbies where I could meet new people, and switched on my brain again by reading books and writing in the evening instead of doomscrolling(апокалипсис).
Honestly I feel happier, healthier and more relaxed than ever before now that I’ve changed my relationship with my phone. So what’s stopping you from doing the same?
I dare you to switch off your phone, switch up your routines and switch on your brain. I promise, you won’t regret it!
--------------------------------------------------------
Wore off" переводится как "прошло, исчезло" и обычно относится к эффекту, который постепенно исчезает или уменьшается со временем.
Три формы глагола "wear off": Wear off - настоящее время (износить) Wore off - прошедшее время Worn off - причастие прошедшего времени
--------------------------------------------------
What is Rebekah's main objective in giving this speech?- to inspire others to rethink their relationship with their smartphone.
All stories have a problem and a solution. What was the problem and the solution Rebekah tells us about in her speech?-Rebekah tells the story of how social media left her feeling like a zombie. Her solution was to give up social media and focus on real-life activities.
Type the expression Rebekah uses to indicate that what she's saying is "an uncomfortable truth".- But very soon my superhero powers wore off because social media came along and turned me into a zombie. And let’s face it, I’m not the only one.
Which rhetorical question does Rebekah use to signal what she's going to discuss next?- So how did I take control of the situation ?
Rebekah is using tricolon in this part of the speech. " I switched off(выключила) social media apps completely, switched up(переключила) my routines(переключила) by startigsome-start some- new hobbies where I could meet new people, and switched on(включила) my brain again by reading books and writing in the evening instead of doomscrolling"(апокалипсис)She uses three parallel phrasal verbs: "switched off", "switched up" and "switched on" to form a tricolon. Rebekah talks about improvements in her own life to persuade the audience.Ребекка рассказывает об улучшениях в своей жизни, чтобы убедить зрителей.- "Honestly I feel happier, healthier and more relaxed than ever before now that I’ve changed my relationship with my phone".- She implies that they too can feel "happier", "healthier" and "more relaxed" if they changed their phone habits.
Now it's your time to shine! 🌟 😊
