Who wants to be a billionaire? 

In this lesson we'll take a glimpse(представление) into the life of a billionaire/ˌbɪl.jəˈneər/ and explore(изучим, познакомимся) some different viewpoints about the super wealthy(очень богатые).

Billionaires are much more common than they used to be, but not all wealthy people come into their money(получать деньги) (become rich) in the same way(одинаково).  
Let's face it - billionaires in the 21st century tend to fall into(впадают) two broad(широкую) (general) categories. Let's see how we can describe them...

Idiom: to take an idea and run with it... We use this expression in situations where we have an initial idea for something and then further develop it in a much bigger way. Let's see how Aerin uses it in the video...

Expressing opinions about billionaires On the next few screens we'll explore some different opinions on the two types of billionaire that we've seen in the lesson so far and see how using "would" and "wouldn't" can make our opinions seem more cautious.-осторожнее.

I'd say that self-made billionaires are far more deserving of their wealth than those who inherited it. -The speaker doesn't respect any kind of billionaire. FALSE -They seem to approve sympathetic towards billionaires who earned their money through business and hard work.

Expressing cautious opinions 

When we aren't confident or certain of our opinion or a statement we're making, we can use the expression "I would/wouldn't + verb" to appear more cautious -более осторожными.  Remember, to sound more natural we use the contracted form "I'd" instead of "I would".

I think it's Jeff Bezos. I mean, let's face it, Amazon has really changed the way we shop on a huge scale. It was a lifesaver during the pandemic!

Yes, but earning $8 million dollars an hour?! I just can’t wrap my head around it… Nobody needs that amount of money. Billionaires shouldn't be allowed to earn so much more than everyone else.

Shawn

Hmm, I wouldn’t say that people shouldn’t be allowed to become billionaires. You have to admit that many of them became rich because they took crazy ideas and ran with them, despite the risks. Shouldn’t they be rewarded for that? Otherwise, there'd be no real incentive(стимул) for people to work hard.

Lyndsay

But does Jeff Bezos actually work harder than other people in society? I'd argue that people in some professions deserve to be paid a lot more than they are. We should be taxing billionaires more and using that money to raise the minimum wage for, say, teachers...

Shawn

Sure, people should get paid fairly, but I wouldn't underestimate (недооценить)the contribution that some billionaires have made to society as a whole. Can you seriously imagine your life without a computer? Billionaires have raised the standard of living for everyone through innovation and they've created jobs.

Lyndsay

True, many billionaires have created positive legacies, but that's not true for all of them. While many of the richest billionnaires are self-made, there are plenty of heirs and heiresses who didn't really do anything to earn their money, their relatives did!

Shawn

Okay, maybe you have a point there, but I wouldn't want to assume(предположить) they've done nothing to deserve their wealth.

Lyndsay

Well, maybe that's the case for some. And then what if billionaires have had some kind of negative social impact? Some billion-dollar businesses have a dark side to them. Plus, some of them are starting to wield(владеть) too much political power.

Shawn

Absolutely, we should certainly be critical of that, but I wouldn't say that billionaires themselves are the problem and I'm still not sure taxing billionaires personally sends the right message...

Lyndsay

I'm sorry, but if someone earns $8 million an hour I'd think they can afford(позволить себе) to pay a little more income tax(подоходный налог) for the good of society as a whole. It's a drop in the ocean to those guys!

"I'm still not sure taxing billionaires personally sends the right message. You have to admit, I've taken that idea and run with it. I wouldn't say I wouldn't underestimate the social impact. Let's face it, the concept of self-made individuals and the idea of legacies being passed down have a profound effect. An heir or an heiress inherits not only wealth but also a glimpse into the past. Fairly or not, people might assume that the case for some billionaires wielding too much political power is true. I'm sorry, but it wouldn't be fair to assume that someone fairly wielding political power isn't trying to appear cautious about it."
