The art of public speaking
In the previous lesson we explored strategies for speaking when we haven't had chance to prepare. In the next few lessons, we'll look at public speaking, which is very different.
For many people, the idea of giving a speech(выступление с речью)is intimidating(пугающее) (scary), but everyone can learn to become a better public speaker using some techniques we'll discover in this lesson.
First we'll look at some vocabulary related to public speaking, and then watch a video to learn some of the techniques used by the former US President Barack Obama, one of the most accomplished(опытный) public speakers in modern history.
to hold someone's attention-привлекать внимание
An engaging public speaker is able to hold the audience's attention while they are speaking.

"I went to a wedding last week and the best man speech was incredible. Gestures are an excellent way to reinforce what you are saying. The word "reinforce" has a similar meaning to "make stronger".(стать сильнее) TRUE If we "reinforce" something, this is another way to say we "strengthen it".

How to make speeches like Barack Obama
Public speaking is considered an art form for a very good reason(причине). If you want to hold(привлечь) someone's attention to entertain(развлечь) or persuade(убедить) them, then you need to put some preparation into writing and delivering your speech.Публичные выступления считаются формой искусства по очень веской причине. As we'll see next it's not only what you say that's important, but how you say it. Obama uses some specific techniques to ensure that his message resonates with his audience and persuades(убедит) them to take action. Can you predict what they are?

Barack Obama: speeches

The United States was founded upon several key ideals: democracy, rights, liberty, opportunity and equality. These ideals are important for helping us to understand American culture. The term "The American Dream" refers to the long-standing belief that anyone can work hard and become successful in the United States, regardless of where or what social class they were born into. There are strong parallels between Barack Obama's own story and the original "American Dream" which he incorporates into his storytelling... What effect do you think this has on the listener?--

You may sometimes hear the American flag referred to as "the stars and stripes" or "the star spangled(сияющий) banner".(знамя со звездой)
These names come from the appearance of the flag, which contains 13 red and white alternating stripes and 50 white stars on a dark blue background in the upper left hand corner. The stripes represent the 13 British colonies which declared independence from the UK in 1776, while the stars represent the 50 states which make up the "United States".
Obama talks with his hands. He uses his hands to reinforce(подкрепить) what he’s saying. It’s like you almost feel you get the main idea of his speech without the words. Обама говорит руками. Using gestures 🙆 🙅
When you are making a speech, it's important to use body language, such as hand gestures, effectively to reinforce(подкрепить) your message, but be careful - it's possible to use your hands too much when giving a speech. 😲
Waving your hands around in a distracting(отвлекающей) and continuous manner is not going to help the listener at all!
You want to use gestures at certain points in your speech to keep people focused - think of them of as a form of visual punctuation.
Let's watch the video again. This time don't focus on what he says, but on how he uses his hands.
