Welcome back! In the previous lesson we learned some vocabulary to describe people and their behaviour.In this lesson we will expand on this and learn at how prefixes (small particles like "un–" and "im–" which we add to the beginning of a word) can be used to give adjectives a negative meaning (e.g. "untrustworthy", "immature", etc.). Are you ready to sharpen your word building skills? Let's do this! 

1. Un- (не-):

   • happy (счастливый) → unhappy (несчастливый)
   • successful (успешный) → unsuccessful (неуспешный)

2. Dis- (не-):

   • honest (честный) → dishonest (нечестный)
   • organized (организованный) → disorganized (неорганизованный)

3. In- / Im- / Il- / Ir- (не-):

   • mature (зрелый) → immature (незрелый)
   • legal (законный) → illegal (незаконный)
   • rational (рациональный) → irrational (иррациональный)

4. Non- (не-):

   • profit (прибыль) → nonprofit (некоммерческий)
   • smoker (курящий) → nonsmoker (некурящий)

• She was unhappy with the results of the experiment. (Она была несчастлива результатами эксперимента.)
• The team was disorganized, and the project suffered as a result. (Команда была неорганизованной, и проект пострадал из-за этого.)

  It seemed logical for my friend Marcela to move in. I had a spare room and she needed a place to live! Это казалось логичным для моей подруги Марселы. У меня была свободная комната, и ей нужно было где-то жить!What could we say if we think something seems "sensible"(разумный) or "makes sense"(имеет смысл)? Что мы можем сказать, если думаем, что-то кажется "разумным" или "имеет смысл"?-This seems logical.If someone's behaviour is "illogical" it is "not logical".   Negative adjective prefixes (ir–, im– and il–) 

  We can change the form of adjectives such as "logical" to make their meaning negative. We do this adding a prefix (a particle added to the beginning of the word) ➡️ "illogical".
  
  There are some patterns to help you:

  ir– (words beginning with "r")	responsible ➡️ irresponsible
  im– (words beginning with "m" or "p")	mature ➡️ immature, polite ➡️ impolite
  il– (words beginning with "l")	logical ➡️ illogical

  Select the personality traits which have a negative meaning.-irresponsible, immature, illogical, irrational, impatient, illegal  /ɪˈliːɡəl/-Look, you don't have to worry. Your brother may be irrational sometimes, and a little impatient, but he would never do something illegal!Слушай, тебе не о чем волноваться. Твой брат иногда может быть иррациональным и немного нетерпеливым, но он никогда не сделал бы что-то противозаконное!

  • I hate driving with my best friend, she's so impatient. Whenever we get stuck in traffic, she yells out (кричит)of the window at other drivers and it's really embarrassing(стыдно).

  /jɛl/-yell - кричать, орать

  1. He was so frustrated that he began to yell at his colleagues.

     • Он был так раздражен, что начал кричать на своих коллег.

  2. The coach yelled instructions to the players from the sidelines.

  3. The child started to yell when he couldn't find his favorite toy.

  4. • My friend thinks his girlfriend's cheating on him because she's not answering her phone. That seems irrational, she's probably just busy working!Моя подруга думает, что его подружка изменяет ему, потому что она не отвечает на звонки. Это кажется иррациональным, она, вероятно, просто занята работой! I don't mind my son being a bit rebellious, it's normal teenage behaviour – as long as he doesn't do anything illegal . Я не против того, что мой сын немного бунтарский, это нормальное подростковое поведение - до тех пор, пока он не делает ничего противозаконного.

     • Uncooperative: невзаимодействующий (кто-то, кто не желает сотрудничать).

     • Undependable: ненадежный (кто-то, кому нельзя полагаться).

     • /ɪˈliːɡəl/The use of drugs is illegal in many countries.

       Использование наркотиков является незаконным во многих странах.

       Entering the country without proper documentation is considered illegal.

       Въезд в страну без соответствующих документов считается незаконным.

       It is illegal to download copyrighted material without permission.

     • Exceptions to the rule ⚠️

       There are some adjectives with a negative meaning which do not take the prefixes "im–" or "ir–", even though they begin with the letter "m", "p" or "r".

  1. Unmotivated: немотивированный (кто-то, кто не хочет делать что-то).

  2. Unprepared: неподготовленный (кто-то, кто не готов к чему-то).

  3. Unrealistic: нереалистичный (кто-то, кто не принимает факты).

  4. Unreliable: ненадежный (кто-то, кому нельзя доверять).

  5. The speaker is feeling excited and ready to attend the conference. False -She says she feels "unmotivated" and "unprepared" so she doesn't want to do it and doesn't feel ready for it. When I told my chemistry teacher I wanted to study the subject at university, he told me I was being unrealistic. I'd love to know what he'd say about it now..If something is "unreliable" then it can't be trusted or it's "untrustworthy"".Если что-то "ненадежно", то ему нельзя доверять или оно "ненадежно". 

  6. What about loyalty?

     The adjective "loyal" (to consistently support someone) is also an exception and does not take the prefix "il–", even though it begins with "l".
     
     What prefix should we use to express the idea that someone is "not loyal"? 
     Let's find out! The prefix used to express the idea that someone is "not loyal" is "dis-." So, the term would be "disloyal." I would be surprised if you told me David was cheating on(изменял) Pablo. He doesn't seem like the type of guy who would be disloyal.Я был бы удивлен, если бы вы сказали мне, что Дэвид изменяет Пабло. Он не похож на парня, который был бы нелояльным.

  7. Review: exceptions to the rule ⚠️

     We've just seen some adjectives beginning with "m", "p", "r" and "l" which take the prefix "un–" or "dis–".
     
     The prefix "un–" is probably the most common one used to make positive adjectives negative, so if you are feeling unsure of yourself and need to guess, there's a high chance that "un–" might be correct. 

     motivated (someone who wants to do something) ➡️ unmotivated

     prepared (someone who is ready for something) ➡️ unprepared

     realistic (someone who accepts the facts) ➡️ unrealistic

     reliable (someone who can be trusted) ➡️ unreliable

     loyal (someone who consistently supports someone) ➡️ disloyal

     
     

  8. • When I'm really hungry, I become impatient. I lost my job two months ago and I've had no luck in finding a new one. I know I should keep on applying, but after so many rejections I just feel so unmotivated.Я потерял работу два месяца назад, и мне не удалось найти новую. Я знаю, что должна продолжать подавать заявления, но после стольких отказов я чувствую себя такой немотивированной.

     • • My friend hates her job, but she refuses to change, saying she doesn't want the time she has already spent on it to be "wasted". I think it's irrational|illogical to stay in a job for that reason.Моя подруга ненавидит свою работу, но она отказывается меняться, говоря, что не хочет, чтобы время, которое она уже потратила на нее, было "зря".        • 1. Unloyal: Это слово не является стандартным или распространенным. Вместо "unloyal" обычно используется "disloyal".

         2. Disloyal: Это прилагательное означает "неверный", "нелояльный". Человек, считающийся "disloyal", не проявляет верности или преданности к кому-то или чему-то.

            Пример: "His disloyal actions led to a breakdown in trust within the team." (Его нелояльные действия привели к разрушению доверия в команде.)

         3. Illegal: Это прилагательное означает "незаконный", противоречащий закону.

            Пример: "Drug trafficking is an illegal activity." (Торговля наркотиками является незаконной деятельностью.)

         4. Unlegal: Такого слова в стандартном английском языке нет. Вместо этого используется "illegal" для обозначения незаконности.

         5. • In the USA cheating on a husband or wife is not just disloyal, it's also still illegal in 21 states and can be punished by imprisonment.В США измена мужу или жене не просто нелояльна, она также по-прежнему незаконна в 21 штате и может быть наказана лишением свободы.

         • Trust is one of the things I value most in a partner. I won't tolerate a partner who is disloyal|untrustworthy|

         • unreliable.= untrustworthy-ненадежный

         • • I worry about my daughter sometimes. She's sixteen, but she's still very immature and irresponsible. I always have to check that she is on top of her studies. It's unrealistic to think that you can become fluent in a week. Language learning takes time - you have to be patient.
