CARPENTRY
Jim and Maggie Brown are a young married couple. They are now
at their house just outside London. Maggie is in the sitting-room
listening to the radio. A sound of hammering is heard.

Maggie: (calls out loudly): Jim, what are you doing in there?1 You're
making a terrible noise.
Jim: I'm mending the larder shelf. You asked me to do it this
morning. You know it's always falling down.
Maggie: Can't you leave it till later?2 I'm trying to listen to the radio.
Jim: I won't be a moment now.3 I'm just hammering in the last nail.
Are you listening to the Elgar4 concert?
Maggie: No, that's later. It's ”Viewpoint”5 now. Carol Reed6 is
talking about the Polish Cinema7 (telephone rings). Hallo, Maggie
Brown speaking.8 Oh, hallo Jane! Can you speak a little louder? Jim is
hammering away9 in the larder and I can't hear you (short pause). I'm
glad you rang, Jane. Are you doing anything this evening? Good. Then
come and keep me company.10
Jim: Who are you talking to, Maggie?
Maggie: It's Jane. She's coming round11 this evening. Yes, I'll be
alone. Jim is going to his evening class12 tonight. He's taking a course
in carpentry. He's always taking bits of furniture to pieces13 nowadays,
and trying to put them together14 again. Well, see you at seven15 then.
'Bye,16 Jane.
Jim: There,17 that's the shelf seen to.18 You see, this carpentry course
is proving very useful after all,19 I say,20 Maggie, are we having supper
soon? I must leave about seven.

Maggie: I'm just putting the kettle on.21 What about scrambled eggs
on toast?
Jim: Sounds fine.22
Maggie: Where are the eggs, Jim? You've moved everything in the
larder and I can't find them.
Jim: I think I put them on the shelf (loud crash). Good heavens!
What’s happening in there?23
Maggie: Just the shelf again, and all the eggs as well this time. The
carpentry course is proving very useful, isn't it?

JANE AND MAGGIE HAVE A CHAT1
Maggie's friend Jane has just come round for a chat. Jim is getting
ready to go to his carpentry class.

Maggie: Come in, Jane, we're just finishing supper. You'll have a
cup of coffee, won't you?2
Jane: Thanks, Maggie.
Jim: Well, I must be leaving now, or I'll be late for my class. Good-
bye, Jane. Sorry I can't stay3 and talk to you.
Jane: Good-bye, Jim.
Maggie: Come and sit down by the fire,4 Jane, and tell me all about
your new job. It's with a travel agency,5 isn't it?
Jane: Yes, I do our Austrian correspondence.6
Maggie: Is your German still good enough or do you write your
letters in English?
Jane: I can just about manage with my German,7 and I'm learning
Russian, you know.
Maggie: Russian? Why?
Jane: We arrange tours in Eastern Europe as well. I go to evening
classes twice a week and I'm getting on quite well.8 Why don't you
come along,9 Maggie, you'd enjoy it. I remember you used to be very
good at languages10 at school.
Maggie: Oh, I'm far too tired11 in the evenings. After supper I sit
down with a book or listen to the radio. You're much more energetic
than I am.
Jane: I enjoy the classes, but I must say they are tiring. It's a good
thing I don't have to12 catch 8 o'clock train these days.
Maggie: What time do you start work then?
Jane: 9.30. I usually catch the 8.55. Er... sometimes Robert gives me
a lift13 on his scooter.
Maggie: Who's Robert?
Jane: Oh, he's just someone I met14 in my Russian class. He lives
just round the corner from me. Maggie: And he owns a scooter and takes you to work16 on it. That's a good beginning.
Jane: A good beginning for what, Maggie? Don't start jumping to
conclusions.17 We're just friends.
Maggie: And what does he do for a living,18 this Robert?
Jane: He works on the Daily Sentinel19 as a reporter. This week he's
covering the Trade Union Congress20 in Blackpool.21
Maggie: And why is he learning Russian?
Jane: He wants to go to Russia this summer, if he can.
Maggie: Well, I can see you're going to make excellent progress in
your Russian classes, with such interesting company.22 Are you
learning to ride a scooter as well?
Jane: Don't be silly, Maggie!

JIM AND MAGGIE ARE GOING AWAY FOR THE WEEK1
Jim Brown is a teacher. He is having a short holiday at the end of
term. He and his wife are just getting ready to go away.
Jim: Have you packed everything yet, Maggie? We must hurry if we
don't want to miss the train.
Maggie: Yes, everything's ready. But I haven't had time to collect
your coat from the cleaners'.2 We'll have to pick it up on the way3 to
the station.
Jim: You haven't forgotten my razor?
Maggie: No, I haven't. But I'm sure you've forgotten to buy new
blades for it.
Jim: Oh, dash it, so I have!4 Never mind 5 we can buy some at the
station kiosk. Have you telephoned for the taxi yet?
Maggie: Yes, it should be here any moment now.6
Jim: Goodness,7 how I'm looking forward to this week away!8 What
a hectic term9 it's been! I haven't had time to breathe (door-bell rings).
That must be the taxi. All ready to leave,10 Maggie?
Maggie: Just a minute.11 Let's make sure12 we haven't forgotten
anything. Have you cancelled the newspaper?13
Jim: Yes, I did that this morning.
Maggie: Have you put the note I gave you14 for the milkman?
Jim: Yes, yes, of course I have.
Maggie: You've bolted all the windows, haven't you, and locked the
back door?15
Jim: Good heavens, Maggie, you've asked me that at least dozen
times. Hurry up now, for goodness sake!16
Maggie: Don't shout, Jim. Have you turned out the pilot light17
under the water heater?
Jim: Yes, I have. And I've turned off all the lights, and the radio and
the television. Now are you coming?
Maggie: Well, that's all, I suppose. You remembered to get the
reservations,18 didn't you?
Jim: But, Maggie, I asked you to get those, on the way home from
the office.
Maggie: Oh, Jim, so you did,19 but I forgot. I had my mind so full of
all the other things that needed doing.20
Jim: Yes, I know. Notes for the milkman, pilot lights and what not.21
We simply must leave now. If we can't get a seat we'll have to stand 26

Jim: Maggie, you're starting all over again!22 We'll never get away,23
we might as well unpack24 and stay here.
Maggie: But I'm coming, Jim. Here you are,25 I'm quite ready.
Jim: Well, at last
