LESSON 6 CHAPTER 13
Developing fluency
Evaluating life in your city
In this lesson, we'll practise using real conditionals to state general truths, describe present habits and talk about likely future situations.
You'll also send a short email or voice note to a friend who's considering (рассматривает) a move to your city.
Actually, this is exactly what happened to Femi, who lives in Lagos, Nigeria. Let's listen to the voice note (записка) he's just received.
-------------------------------------------------------
Hey, family, what’s up? How are things in Nigeria?
I can’t believe we finished business school two years ago already. Time really flies.
So, I’m really sorry. We haven’t had a chance to talk lately, but life’s been pretty busy in San Francisco.
Actually, I’m getting in touch now because my company is thinking about transferring me to Lagos for a year.
Obviously, I’m excited about the possibility of working in Lagos, but if it happens, it will probably be within the next three months, which doesn’t give me much time to research things.
If I take this transfer, it will be amazing for my career, but I've never visited Africa, let alone Nigeria. I know it's likely to be pretty different from life in the US.
But I’m not really sure about what to expect, whenever Nigeria appears in newspapers here.
It’s usually for a mixture of positive and negative reasons.
And I’d rather talk to Nigerians about their own country to get a more balanced view, since you live in Lagos.
And you know what US culture is like?
Can you give me some tips on what to expect? Hey.

NOTE Lesson 6 Chapter 13
Hey.

Write them a short email or send them a voice note using some real conditional structures to tell them...
Note 2 Lesson 6 Chapter 13
Hey Vanessa,
It's amazing to hear you might be moving to Lagos!
First of all, don't believe everything you read in the American news about Nigeria!!
If you believe the papers, you might think that living in Nigeria's unsafe, but this misrepresents our culture.
If you move to Lagos, the risks you'll face are exactly the same as in any other big city.
Some neighbourhoods are obviously safer than others, so when you find out where your office is, I'll recommend some good neighbourhoods.
If you come here, you might experience frequent power cuts, but they don't last long and you'll adapt quickly.
Besides that, Lagos is an awesome place to live!
If you like the hustle and bustle of San Francisco, you'll probably feel very at home here.
Everyone hates the traffic, sure, and life here's fast-paced, but I never get bored and it's easy to make new friends.
Whenever I meet my friends, we like to check out new restaurants and go out dancing.
"Lagos is a cultural melting pot where African, Western and Asian influences come together, so the food and music scene's really interesting." -
"I'll definitely show you around. I love showing people my city!" -
"Let me know when it's confirmed!" -

My Note
"Hey there,
I understand
that things are tough in Kharkiv right now with all the bombings,
and it's hard to find the motivation to explore the city when every step reminds us of the destruction around.
But if you do decide to come,
I'll do my best to keep you away from the worst sights
and show you the beauty of our wonderful Kharkiv.
Just give me a moment,
and I'll make sure you get a glimpse of its charm.
Hope to see you!"
